THE CULLIMORES
notes by P John Partington
JOSEPH CULLIMORE OF THORNBURY & TORTWORTH (c. 1661 - 1708)
In the early seventeenth century there were Cullimores recorded at Thornbury, but our first definite ancestor was Joseph, born in 1661 or a little earlier. His wife’s name is not known for certain, but was possibly Elizabeth, since a Joseph, husband of Elizabeth, was recorded at Tortworth in 1706, and their eldest daughter is Elizabeth. In any case Joseph’s wife appears to have died before he wrote his will in May 1707.
He had eight children: William, Joseph, John, Elizabeth and Ashfield, all born before 1686, James baptized in 1686, Joan in 1687 and Sarah in 1693 (details below). By 1707 Joseph was living at Tortworth, having presumably moved from Thornbury after the baptisms of his younger children. On 20 May of that year he made a will, which was proved on 12 May 1708. Its provisions included “fourscore pounds” each to James, Elizabeth, Ashfield and Joane; “a shilling apiece” to Joseph and John, “I having already provided for them”; all the rest of his “goods, chattles and ready money” etc to William.
THE CHILDREN OF JOSEPH (c.1661 - 1708)
Joseph’s first child, William, died in 1733, a “yeoman of Tortworth”. In 1715 he had married a Sarah, “of Charfield”, and we know of seven children: Joseph, Hannah, James, William, Sarah, Elizabeth and Joanna (details below). His will was made on 5 June 1731, with a codicil dated 9 November 1732; it was proved on 16 October 1733. In it we learn of the seven children, and of considerable land and property at Tortworth.
Joseph’s second child, Joseph, was born sometime before 1686, probably at Thornbury. He married Mary, by whom he had at least two children: Joan and Joseph, baptized at Charfield in 1702 and 1707 respectively (details below). His father “provided for him”, in his lifetime, and therefore he received a nominal one shilling in his will. He may have died in 1762.
Joseph’s third child, John, was also born sometime before 1686. He married Sarah Collins at Thornbury on 14 June 1715.
Joseph’s fourth child, Elizabeth, was also born sometime before 1686.
Joseph’s fifth child, Ashfield, was also born sometime before 1686. She married John Bennett of Charfield at Tortworth in 1711. They had at least five children: Joseph, William, Daniel, Ashfield and Sarah. Ashfield was dead by 1738, since John remarried that year.
Joseph’s sixth child, James, was baptized at Thornbury on 21 March 1686; his seventh, Joan, on 27 December 1687; and his eighth, Sarah, on 5 December 1693.
THE CHILDREN OF WILLIAM (bef. 1699 - 1733)
William’s first child was Joseph. He was still alive when his mother wrote her will in 1760.
William’s second child, Hannah, married John Downes. She is mentioned in her mother’s will of 1760.
William’s third child was James. He was appointed executor in his mother’s will of 1760.
William’s fourth child, William, was baptized in 1713. He is mentioned in his father’s will of 1732, but not in his mother’s of 1760.
William’s fifth child, Sarah, married a Mr Till. She is mentioned in her mother’s will of 1760.
William’s sixth child was Elizabeth. She is mentioned, unmarried, in her mother’s will of 1760.
William’s seventh child was Joanna. There is no reference to her in her mother’s will of 1760.
THE CHILDREN OF JOSEPH (bef. 1686 - ?1762)
Joseph’s first child, Joan, was baptized in 1702 at Charfield. On 29 September 1728, still at Charfield, she married Isaac Limbrick, by whom she had six children: Mary, baptized at Yate in 1734, William, born in 1739, a daughter (name unknown), Sarah, Joseph and Hannah.
Joseph’s second child, Joseph, was baptized at Charfield in 1707. Nothing further is known of him.
