THE WARRS

some notes by P John Partington

ROBERT WARR (bef. 1805 - aft. 1848) AND HIS FOREBEARS

Family tradition has it that our Warr ancestors came to Lancashire from Ireland, where they had been involved in the horse trade.  While this may be so, no definite evidence of such origins has yet come to hand.

The earliest Warr ancestor whom I have yet found is Robert, born sometime before 1805.  He married Jane Wade “from Lytham” on 25 June 1821, and had a son, James, according to whose marriage certificate in 1849, Robert was a warper.  Nothing else is known of him at present.

THE CHILDREN OF ROBERT  (bef. 1805 - aft. 1848)

Robert’s son James was born in 1822/3 in Bolton, Lancashire.  He married Elizabeth Ball on 21 January 1849 in Bury parish church.  (Elizabeth had been born in 1824/5 in Bolton;  her father, Henry, was a fishmonger at the time of her marriage in 1849.)  The couple had at least five children – Ann, born in 1849/50, Robert Egerton in 1852, James in 1854/5, John in 1860/1 and Sarah Jane, born in 1863/4 (further details below).  James worked as a cotton carder.  He was recorded in 1852 as living at 11 Back York Street in Bolton.  In 1861 the family were at 75 Soho Street, and in 1871 at 86 Holden Street;  while in 1881 James was living, unemployed, with his wife and Sarah at 92 Platt Street, Great Bolton.

THE CHILDREN OF JAMES  (c. 1822 - aft. 1881)

James’s first child, Ann, was born in 1849/50 in Bolton.  She married James Laycock, by whom she had a daughter Harriet in 1871.  That same year the three of them were living with Ann’s parents at 86 Holden Street;  both Ann & James were working as “cotton operatives”.

James’ second child, Robert Egerton, was born on 24 November 1852 at 11 Back York Street in Bolton.  In 1861 he was living with his family at 75 Soho Street, and in 1871 at 86 Holden Street, Great Bolton and working as a card-cutter.  On 26 March 1874 he married Esther Lindley at Great Lever parish church.  The couple had two children – James Lindley, born in 1874/5 and Alice Ann in 1875/6 (details below).  Esther died in childbirth on 2 November 1878, aged just twenty-four, and three years later Robert and the children were living with her parents, James & Betty, at 10 Earl Street, Great Lever – with Robert still described as a “card cutter”.  The following year he was recorded as living at 47 Bangor Street in Bolton when on 8 November he married Mary Ann Whittle at St George’s, Bolton.  The marriage certificate records him again as a “card-cutter”.  They moved to 54 Poplar(?) Street, and had seven children:  Daniel E in 1883/4, Annie Elizabeth Osborne in 1885, Leah in 1887/8, Ernest in 1889/90, Nellie in 1892/3, Lydia in 1898/9 and Marjorie in about 1904 – further details below.  In 1891 the family were living at 26 Halifax Street, and in 1901 at 55 Ainscow Street in Bolton:  Robert was still working as a cardcutter in a cotton mill.

James’s third child, also James, was born in Bolton in 1854/5.  In 1861 he was living with his family at 75 Soho Street.  Nothing further is known of him.

James’ fourth child, John, was born in Bolton in 1856/7.  Ten years later he was living with his family at 86 Holden Street, working as a card cutter.

James’ fifth child, Henry, was born in Bolton in 1860.  The following year he was living with his family at 75 Soho Street.  Nothing further is known of him.

James’ sixth child, Sarah Jane, was born in 1863/4 in Bolton.  In 1871 she was living with her family at 86 Holden Street, a ‘scholar’.  Ten years later she was living with them at 92 Platt Street, working as a cotton weaver.

Three further children followed:  Fred, Annie, and Ethel.
